Iroko Wood —
Durable and Easy to Work With
Iroko wood, also known as Milicia excelsa, is a strong yet relatively lightweight hardwood from West Africa. It is easy to work with and shows very little movement, which has made it increasingly popular in recent years.

Iroko Wood – A Durable and Versatile Hardwood
Iroko wood is a highly durable hardwood with a lifespan of up to 25 years (durability class 1 or 2). It requires little to no pre-treatment and is exceptionally weather-resistant. This makes Iroko particularly suitable for wooden picnic tables, tiny houses, and wooden garden chairs and benches.
The Iroko tree itself is truly impressive, reaching heights of 50 to 60 metres and diameters of up to 150 centimetres.
Iroko Wood Is a Natural Product
As mentioned, Iroko wood requires minimal pre-treatment and offers excellent resistance to weather conditions. However, wood remains a natural material. When exposed to rain and sunlight, it will gradually develop a silver-grey patina and a slightly rougher texture. This natural process does not affect the quality or durability of garden furniture or tiny houses.
At QBig, we recommend treating the wood with a suitable wood oil. These oils help regulate moisture levels within the wood, reducing weathering and discoloration over time.
Iroko Wood Contributes to Calcium and CO₂ Absorption
The Iroko tree is a remarkable species, classified as an oxalogenic tree. Such trees contribute to CO₂ absorption and soil improvement. The Iroko tree absorbs CO₂ from the air and stores it as calcium carbonate (limestone). On average, these trees absorb around 21 kg of CO₂ per year. This carbon dioxide can remain stored in limestone for hundreds to thousands of years.
Limestone improves soil quality in two ways: it neutralises acidity levels and nourishes surrounding plants with calcium, an essential nutrient.

Douglas Wood — robust, strong, and easy to work with
Douglas wood originates from North America, where it was traditionally known as Oregon Pine. The wood was discovered by the Scottish botanist Sir David Douglas, who brought its seeds to Europe in the 19th century.

Douglas Wood – One of the Most Popular Wood Types
Douglas wood is one of the most popular wood types, mainly due to its versatility. It is widely used for canopies, sheds, verandas, and Douglas garden tables have become especially popular in recent years. Although most applications are outdoors, Douglas wood is increasingly used indoors as well, for example for wooden window frames. It is a popular wood species and, alongside Iroko wood, one of our favourites.
Douglas Wood – Strong, Warm, and Easy to Work With
Douglas wood has a moderately durable classification and falls under durability class 3. This class indicates how long the wood will last. Wood types in this class have an average lifespan of 10 to 15 years when left untreated. This makes Douglas wood suitable for a wide range of applications, both indoors and outdoors. Your Douglas garden table will therefore last for many years.
Douglas wood is one of the hardest European softwoods and continues to increase in hardness after drying. The wood has fine to moderately coarse grain, a reddish-brown heartwood, and yellowish sapwood, which gradually turns a blue-grey colour over time. This natural ageing creates a beautiful effect and is highly valued in Douglas garden tables. If you wish to prevent discolouration, you can treat the wood with stain or impregnation.

Douglas Garden Tables by QBig
Douglas garden tables are becoming increasingly popular in today’s gardens. We also offer these tables, using extra-thick Douglas wooden beams. We choose solid, heavy beams to minimise the risk of movement or cracking during temperature changes. In addition, these massive beams reinforce the table and give it a robust, timeless appearance.
